Going on a short winter hike

journal

The start of 2021 arrived with a snowstorm and I couldn't be happier. Finally the forests around town looked like a landscape from Narnia! The frost was biting at my cheeks as me, Dan and our friends set out for a weekend hike up one of the mountains here last Saturday. We all needed to get outside and were eager to enjoy the fresh snow fall. As we were hiking through the deep snow I realised just how much I've missed the quiet the forest when thick snow muffles the sounds.

We headed for one of the free cabins and our favourite spot. On the way we practiced the art of getting lost, since it had been a while since the last time and because familiar landmarks where hiding under a white blanket of snow. Once there we made a fire, enjoyed lunch and grilled some marshmallows. Ravens circled above us cawing, the fire crackled and we heated up chocolate chip cookies until the chocolate started to melt.

The most enjoyable parts of life really do lie in the simple things.

“I prefer winter and Fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape - the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn't show.”
